About This Offer
Sonata for Bassoon and Piano was composed during 2001 and 2002 for David Breidenthal. Mr Breidenthal was, at the time, principal bassoonist for the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He and his wife, Dale, who is also a violinist with the LA Phil, are family friends and I was happy to compose this piece for him, although it presented me with a bit of a challenge. I’d never written a sonata for an instrument with a low register range. However, the bassoon has such a beautiful and sonorous tone, that it was not difficult to make the adjustment in my mind and ideas came pretty naturally.
The piece is in two movements. The first movement is composed in a sonata allegro form. The piano part is more interactive than accompanimental and is pretty challenging, as is the bassoon part. The development section starts with a fugue with the first theme as its subject. The second movement was written with no specific form in mind but during the scherzo-like second half, implements fragment of the first theme in the first movement.
The piece was commissioned by David Breidenthal and premiered by me and Dave on April 7th, 2003 at Gindi Auditorium at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles, CA.
