"The Nasty Dance" is a wild, raucous feature for tenor sax (Joe Lovano on the original recording) written for the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra in November 1981 and first released on their album, Make Me Smile & Other New Works by Bob Brookmeyer in 1982. It's an up-tempo swing chart that utilizes a few alternate techniques in the ensemble to create a dark, murky landscape in the beginning that gives way to a real swinging party by the end. This is a perfect opportunity for a band’s outstanding tenor soloist to really let loose.

After years of being out of print (and before that, published with many mistakes), we are thrilled to finally make this chart available again, re-engraved and edited directly from Bob's original manuscript score, and the original parts provided by the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. This is the first time in nearly forty years that this music is available to be studied and performed as Bob originally conceived it.
