About This Offer
"Afro-Latin Jazz Suite"; is a composition that deeply reflects my journey as a musician and my commitment to honoring the rich tapestry of Afro-Latin heritage. Commissioned by the Apollo Theater for its 80th anniversary, this suite serves as a modern homage to my father, Chico O’Farrill’s seminal 1941 work, *Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite*. While my father's composition was groundbreaking in its fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz, my piece expands upon this foundation by incorporating diverse musical influences from Africa, Peru, Cuba, India, and the United States. It is a multilingual musical expression that blends montunos, ragas, tone clusters, and blues, embodying the universal language of music that transcends cultural boundaries.
The suite is structured into four movements: "Mother Africa," "All of the Americas," "Adagio," and "What Now?" Each movement explores different facets of Afro-Latin identity and musical expression. "Mother Africa" delves into South Asian harmonium textures and indigenous African rhythms, while "All of the Americas" draws inspiration from Peruvian rhythms. The "Adagio" movement reflects the lyrical beauty of my father's ballads, and "What Now?" captures the angularity of contemporary improvisation. This composition is not just a tribute to the past but a forward-looking exploration of the evolving Afro-Latin jazz idiom, aiming to inspire future generations to continue the conversation between cultures and musical traditions.
